1. Social Connections & Network

These backgrounds give your character access to information, backup, or authority figures in the game world.

  • Allies: Trustworthy NPCs (friends, family, or loyal partners) who will actively help you, put themselves at risk for you, or fight by your side.

  • Contacts: Information brokers or acquaintances in specific industries (e.g., a dirty cop, a street-level informant, a noble's clerk). They won't take a bullet for you, but they will sell or trade vital info.

  • Mentor / Patron: A powerful individual (a wizard, a corporate executive, an elder vampire) who provides guidance, training, and political cover in exchange for your loyalty.

  • Followers / Retainers: Subordinates, henchmen, squires, or cultists who obey your commands and manage your daily affairs, but are mechanically weaker than full Allies.

  • Rivals / Enemies: The inverse of connections. Having this background provides extra starting points or character depth by establishing someone who is actively working against you. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

2. Material Resources & Wealth

These backgrounds dictate what your character physically owns or can access financially before adventuring begins.

  • Resources: Your general liquid wealth, income, and standard of living (ranging from poverty-stricken urchin to billionaire).

  • Relic / Artifact / Fetish: A unique, historically significant, or magical item of power that belongs to you from day one.

  • Equipment / Arsenal: Access to restricted, military-grade, or highly specialized gear that ordinary citizens or low-level characters cannot normally purchase.

  • Holdings / Property: Concrete real estate or territory, such as a wizard's tower, a safehouse network, a family estate, or a pirate ship. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

3. Influence & Standing

These represent how the broader world perceives your character and what doors your name can open.

  • Influence / Fame: Your pull in mortal or faction-specific politics (e.g., media influence, underworld pull, high society status).

  • Status / Rank: Your official position within a rigid hierarchy (e.g., a military captain, a knight, a corporate regional manager, a religious bishop).

  • Backing / Affiliation: The official endorsement of a massive, powerful organization (like the Church, a mega-corporation, or a royal crown) that protects you from local law enforcement. [1, 2]

4. Esoteric & Supernatural Backgrounds

These connect your character directly to the spiritual, magical, or cosmic elements of the setting.

  • Sanctuary / Pocket Realm: A magically secure location, node, or Umbral glade where your character can rest, hide, or gather magical energy safely.

  • Totem / Spirit Guide: A spiritual entity or concept that watches over your character (or your entire adventuring group), granting specific supernatural blessings and taboos.

  • Ancestry / Mnesis: Genetic memory or a spiritual lineage that allows you to tap into the knowledge, skills, or secrets of your dead ancestors.

  • Destiny / Fate: A cosmic or divine protection indicating your character is bound for greatness; it often translates to a pool of "luck" or "fate points" that allow you to cheat death. [1, 2]
